Having dabbled with minor home extensions and renovations in the past, this time we decided to embark on a completely different beast. The conversion of an old steel-framed cowbarn into a highly efficient family home, in its entirety.

No architect, no build team, no project manager, no interior designer and a conservative budget. All we had was a mobile home to live in on site, the shell of a barn and the surrounding land, leaving us the task of organising absolutely everything ourselves.

I’m not sure we will ever be 100% finished with this project, but suffice to say that we are very proud of our achievements in creating a beautiful family home from the ground up, with an emphasis on retaining original features and utilising new materials which complement them. Furthermore, a big emphasis on achieving high insulation values whilst utilising renewable energy to reduce our carbon footprint as much as possible.
